History

The Patients' Behbud Society for Aga Khan University Hospital (PBS) was founded in 2001 by well-wishers of Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH). Its main objective is to assist mustehiq (financially disadvantaged) patients to avail high quality health care at AKUH.

Whilst it was conceived  prior to 2001, the constitution and by-laws were developed with the help of our respected members and those with immense knowledge of legal and shariah compliancy matters and was formally registered as a social welfare organisation with the Directorate of Social Welfare, Government of Sindh.

The Society's single source of funding is zakat contributions (and donations) received from individual donors and corporations. The faculty and staff members of AKU also contribute to PBS.

The collected funds are disbursed for the treatment of mustehiq patients in accordance with shariah.
