Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) is a defect in the structure of the heart that is present at birth. Every year 60,000 children in Pakistan are born with CHD. 60 per cent of patients will not make it past their first few years due to poor diagnosis and lack of tertiary healthcare institutions. The good news is that, with timely treatment, 85 per cent can survive into adulthood to live healthy, productive lives.
The Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) has been providing high quality care to children with CHD. As a leader in paediatric healthcare, AKUH remains passionately dedicated to our core purpose - providing access to quality healthcare for every child.
In 2015, we began a partnership with many of you to raise awareness of CHD and funds for our Mending Kids' Hearts campaign. Because of your generosity and commitment, we have been able to performs more than 400 paediatric cardiac procedures each year, providing financial assistance to over 70 per cent of our patients who come from low income groups. With your continuing support, we aspire to perform over a thousand CHD procedures annually.
