Our Work

Congenital Heart Disease

Congenital Heart Diseases (CHD) are defects in the structure of the heart that are present at birth. Every year, 60,000 children in Pakistan are born with CHD; 60% of them do not make it past their first few years due to poor diagnosis and treatment. The good news is that, with timely treatment, 85% can survive into adulthood to live healthy, productive lives.

The Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) offers high-quality care to children with CHD. As a leader in paediatric healthcare, AKUH remains passionately dedicated to our core purpose – providing access to quality healthcare, in this case, for every child.

In 2015, AKUH began a partnership with many of you, to raise awareness of CHD and to raise funds for our Mending Kids' Hearts campaign. Since then, because of your generosity and commitment, we have been able to perform over 1,000 paediatric cardiac procedures and provide financial assistance to over 70% of our CHD patients who come from low-income groups. With your continuing support and Sadaqat and Zakat donations to The Patients’ Behbud Society (PBS) for AKUH, our doctors can aspire to perform over a thousand CHD procedures annually.
