Breast Cancer Awareness Month is commemorated in October across the globe. In this context, the University Hospital is running a campaign, “Let’s Defeat Breast Cancer Together”, which is focused on both increasing awareness about the disease and raising funds for women who cannot afford treatment for breast cancer.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide and affects women of all socio-economic classes. The majority of breast cancer deaths - a devastating 69 per cent - occur in the less developing world*. Poverty, lack of screening programmes, poor public health facilities, fears and lack of information all contribute to the limited number of women who seek timely intervention and help with breast cancer.
Early detection and intervention has been established to be effective in decreasing mortality from breast cancer. The AKUH’s Let’s Defeat Breast Cancer Together campaign will run from October 1, 2017 to October 31, 2017. During this month, the Hospital will offer subsidised screening mammograms, breast cancer clinics with opportunity to get early appointments (if identified as high risk), breast cancer health awareness sessions, a breast cancer awareness walk, self-breast examination information and support groups.
The treatment for breast cancer can be extensive and the period of treatment difficult for patients and their families. In 2016, the Hospital's welfare programme assisted over 2,500 patients who could not afford the treatment for cancer, including a significant number suffering from breast cancer. However, the number of patients who seek financial assistance continues to increase.
